Sonata No. 3 (1999) by Horatiu Radulescu
Sonata No. 6 (2007) by Horatiu Radulescu
Stephen Clarke has found the task of coming up with a more personal and concise bio extremely difficult, not for his lack of personal depth. It appears that he has always been drawn to intensely spiritual music full of complexity and demanding complete dedication. We as colleagues respect him immensely and have his full permission to do away with his traditional bio, save for this.
This program presents two works by Romanian composer Horatiu Radulescu (1942-2008), the "proto-spectralist". The Third Sonata "you will endure forever" and Sixth Sonata "return to the source of light" take their inspiration from the Tao Te Ching and present Romanian folk melodies on a spectral "canvas". The Sixth Sonata is his last composition and utilizes the extended range of the Bosendorfer piano.
The beginning of the Tao Te Ching states, “That which could be articulated is not eternal.” Perhaps that not only sums up Radulescu but also Stephen Clarke.
