David Hetherington took up the cello after finding the violin too uncomfortable after one lesson. He hasn’t looked back and has developed a keen interest in contemporary music which is also perhaps uncomfortable but nonetheless challenging and extremely rewarding.
He has personally worked with manycomposers such as Chan Ka Nin, Brian Cherney, Henri Dutilleux, Heinz Holliger, Helmut Lachenmann, Magnus Lindberg, Elliott Carter, Krzysztof Penderecki, Alice Ho and Alexina Louie for performances of their works for cello. His String Quartet Accordes performs contemporary music exclusively and his Amici Chamber Ensemble has commissioned more than 20 new compositions.
In 2005 Helmut Lachenmann specifically asked that David be the one to perform his iconic work pression because he appreciated that he was one of the few cellists he had encountered who would actually agree do everything he asked for in this challenging music.
